Lavender... The Duct Tape of Essential Oils

Is there anyone who is not familiar with duct tape and its incredible versatility? Duct tape is a very simple, unique, universal tool-most famous for its ability to be used in many situations. Lavender oil is to aromatherapy what duct tape is to McGiver.

As a Certified Aromatherapist, I often recommend Lavender (Lavandula augustifolia also known as vera) to my clients, especially those who are using aromatherapy for the first time.  Lavender is a very gentle, soothing and balancing oil. It is known as an adaptagenic oil which means it adapts its action (either stimulating or sedating) depending on what your body requires.

Lavender has a sweet, floral-herbaceous refreshing aroma with a pleasant, balsamic-woody undertone. The fruity top note is short lived and the base note is not long lasting. It blends well with most oils, particularly bergamot, citrus oils, clary sage, geranium, patchouli, pine and rosemary. Many people are familiar with Lavender/Chamomile mix that is used in many products including body wash, bath salts and shampoo.

Now your probably thinking ‘I know all this’- but do you know how valuable Lavender would be in your First Aid kit? You should think of Lavender as your all purpose skin oil. It can be applied neat (undiluted) in many cases such as:

  • Minor burns

  • Cuts and scrapes

  • Animal bites

  • Insect bites

  • Jellyfish stings

  • Snake bites

  • Spider bites

  • and Sun burned skin- after area has been cooled by 2-3 cold baths.

Lavender is also effective as an insect repellent, especially when mixed with other repelling essential oils such as geranium and lemongrass.

Lavender is used to aid in the treatment of acne, allergies, athlete’s foot, boils, bruises, eczema, dandruff, dermatitis, psoriasis, chilblains, ringworm, scabies, asthma, earaches, coughs, colds and flu, catarrh, laryngitis, nausea, colic, cystitis, painful menstruation, depression, headache, insomnia, migraine, nervous tension. PMS and stress related disorders.

Lavender heals and protects the skin when added to your daily lotion or moisturizer. It is an air purifier when diffused or sprayed throughout the house. It eliminates odors and refreshes closets, shoes and laundry. I like to use Lavender in my shampoo and conditioner for an uplifting aroma that stays with me for the day. It can be used in your vacuum cleaner and as a gentle cleaner when mixed with baking soda.

So you see Lavender really is an essential, versatile, multi-purpose tool. If you are not currently using Lavender, you should consider its benefits and give it a try. Instead of reaching for pain relievers when you have your next headache, reach for Lavender and gently inhale it from a tissue or rub it on the back of your neck. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Lavender is an inexpensive oil and can be purchased from some pharmacies or through us at www.ineways.com/ejwellness.

I have many other recipes and ideas on how to use Lavender in your daily life and your canines too. If you have any comments, questions or concerns, please contact me at jillmturpin@aol.com or (518) 339-4348.

Essentially yours,

Jill

Editor's Note:   The versatility of lavender can not be overstated.  It's super easy to use too...  Since it is not a "hot" oil it is one of only a few oils that can be applied directly to the skin (neat).  My personal favorite use for it: direct application to mosquito bites.  A single drop rubbed into the bite will make the itch disappear.  Dave.
