What weighs 32 pounds, is 40
inches wide, 12 inches tall, costs about $200, can be
loaded into the back of any mid-sized car, and takes the
place of a treadmill, elliptical or any other cardio
equipment? The answer is a "rebounder".
A
rebounder is a fancy name for a mini-trampoline.
Just like it's big cousin, the trampoline, anyone that
can stand up can get started right away by simply
jumping up and down.
What makes the rebounder
particularly interesting from an exercise perspective is
that it offers many of the cardiovascular benefits of
much more expensive and mechanically complicated
equipment at a significantly reduced cost.
Here are some of the key
points about rebounding that may give you cause for
consideration:
- Rebounding
strengthens the musculoskeletal system by increasing
the G-force at impact. In fact it increases it
by about 25%.
- Provides and
alternative cardiovascular exercise system without
the pounding normally associated with running on
treadmills, track surfaces or the streets.
- Increases the
capacity for oxygen uptake.
- It improves your
immune system by increasing the flow of lymphatic
fluid through the lumph nodes.
- It is a load bearing
exercise and can be used to protect against
osteoporosis.
- It improves your
balance skills by improving the brain's sensitivity
to the vestibular apparatus in the inner ear.
- It enhances
digestion.
- It can improve your
vision and strengthen the muscles of the eye.
- It is easy and it is
fun!
For older users there's
even a grab bar accessory so you won't feel like you're
about to fly off of the unit.
Not everyone has the
space or the financial resources to own a treadmill or
elliptical cross trainer. The space and financial
commitments needed for a rebounder truly makes quality
indoor exercise available for anyone who wants it.
We use a rounder in our
studio. We like it. Our clients love it.
One last word of caution,
not all rebounders are created equally. Just like
anything else you'll get what you pay for. Make
sure you shop around and do your homework before
plunking down your hard earned cash. Or ask
someone at Desk Jockey Fitness for advice.
